ICOBI and JCRC Commends Kazo for Exceeding Measles-Rubella Vaccination Target

Kazo district has surpassed its target in the recently concluded five-day Measles-Rubella vaccination campaign, immunising 43,528 children against a target of 35,170, representing 124 per cent coverage.

The campaign, conducted from October 1 to 5, 2026, saw the district vaccinate 8,358 children above its initial target, a performance attributed to the commitment of health workers, community mobilisation and support from development partners.

The achievement was highlighted during a post-campaign review meeting organised by Integrated Community Based Initiatives (ICOBI) at Canon Francis Kyepaaka Hall in Kazo town council today, where district leaders, health workers and development partners reviewed the campaign’s performance and commended the teams involved.

Bosco Turyamureba, the ICOBI Programmes C oordinator, thanked Kazo district for its cooperation during the campaign, saying the organisation had worked with several districts but found Kazo particularly cooperative.

He expressed satisfaction with the district’s performance and pledged continued support for its health programmes.

“We are very happy with the work done, and we shall continue supporting Kazo district. We are here to provide support,” Turyamureba said.

He added that ICOBI had been supporting health-related activities in Burunga, Migina and Kazo sub-counties.

Kazo surpasses target on day four
District vaccination figures show that health workers vaccinated 10,925 children on the first day, representing 31 per cent of the target.

On the second day, another 12,552 children received the vaccine, bringing the cumulative total to 23,477, equivalent to 67 per cent coverage.

A further 7,491 children were vaccinated on the third day, raising the cumulative number to 30,968, or 88 per cent of the target.

Kazo surpassed its target on the fourth day after vaccinating an additional 6,252 children, bringing the cumulative total to 37,410, equivalent to 106 per cent coverage.

On the final day, health workers vaccinated another 6,118 children, bringing the total to 43,528, representing 124 per cent of the district’s target.

The district reported that all eight sub-counties and two town councils exceeded their respective vaccination targets.

Health workers, partners commended
Kazo District Health Officer Dr. Edigar Kansiime thanked health workers for their dedication during the campaign, saying they worked tirelessly for five days to ensure the exercise achieved its objectives.

He also recognised the contribution of development partners, including the Joint Clinical Research Centre (JCRC), ICOBI and Mayanja Memorial Hospital, for supporting the district’s immunisation efforts.

Kansiime further thanked the district’s political leadership, led by LC5 Chairperson Rev. Samuel Mugisha Katugunda; the technical team, led by Chief Administrative Officer Hajji Badru Mayanja Majwala; and the Office of the Resident District Commissioner, led by Captain Yahaya Kakoza.

He congratulated everyone who participated in the campaign, noting that Kazo was among the 29 districts that performed well nationally.

The District Health Officer attributed the achievement to the commitment of health workers, support from the Ministry of Health and development partners, and effective mobilisation of parents and communities to bring eligible children for vaccination.

Basoma Fahad, the Joint Clinical Research Centre team leader in Kazo District, also thanked the district for its cooperation and pledged continued collaboration to improve access to health services.

Fahad said JCRC had supported the district during the Measles-Rubella vaccination campaign and would continue working with local authorities to ensure communities benefit from health interventions.

Leaders call for continued commitment
Chief Administrative Officer Hajji Badru Mayanja Majwala congratulated the health teams and development partners for exceeding the district’s vaccination target, describing the achievement as an important milestone in protecting children’s health.

Mayanja reflected on the devastating effects of measles in the past, recalling stories from his childhood about families that lost several children to the disease, particularly in the Buganda region.

He thanked the government of Uganda, under President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, for its efforts to combat measles and improve healthcare through immunisation programmes.

LC5 Chairperson Rev. Samuel Mugisha Katugunda also applauded health workers, ICOBI, JCRC, Mayanja Memorial Hospital, local leaders and community members for their contributions to the campaign.

Katugunda urged health workers to continue performing their duties diligently, adding that district leadership would continue monitoring their work.

RDC urges health workers to fight other diseases
The Resident District Commissioner for Kazo district, Captain Yahaya Kakoza, who chaired the meeting, thanked health workers and all stakeholders who contributed to the successful vaccination campaign.

Kakoza called on participants to appreciate President Museveni for what he described as the government’s achievements in various sectors, including health.

He also urged health workers to extend the same commitment demonstrated during the Measles-Rubella campaign to the fight against other diseases, particularly malaria, which continues to affect communities.

The RDC said his office would continue monitoring health workers to ensure they fulfil their responsibilities and improve service delivery across the district.

Kazo’s achievement of 124 per cent coverage highlights the importance of coordination between district authorities, health workers, development partners and communities in implementing successful immunisation campaigns.

With 43,528 children vaccinated against a target of 35,170, the district has recorded a significant milestone in its efforts to protect children against measles and rubella.
