Kazo District Lifts Animal Quarantine After Successful Vaccination; Markets Reopening Soon
The Ministry of Agriculture, Animal Industry and Fisheries (MAAIF) has officially lifted the quarantine restrictions on animal movements in Kazo District, which had been imposed due to a foot and mouth disease (FMD) outbreak.
This decision comes after the successful vaccination of animals and the implementation of necessary health measures to combat the disease.
Quarantine restrictions had prohibited the movement of cattle, goats, sheep, and their products from, to, through, and within Kazo District since January 2024, as mandated by the Animal Diseases Act Cap 38.
Following a comprehensive vaccination campaign that achieved over 95.9% coverage, the district leadership submitted a report to MAAIF requesting the reopening of animal markets.
During a meeting held today at the district headquarters, Kazo District Chief Administrative Officer Hajji Badru Mayanja expressed gratitude to the production department and all district leaders for their diligent efforts in fighting FMD. He urged the team to maintain public awareness and security, especially since some surrounding districts have not yet completed their vaccination campaigns.
Deputy District Internal Security Officer Mr. Mugume Joseph, representing the Resident District Commissioner (RDC) and who also chaired the meeting, echoed these sentiments, thanking the team for their commitment to combatting FMD.
Mr. Zefrine Tumwesigye, the District Production Officer, assured attendees that strict monitoring will be enforced to oversee animal movements from outside Kazo District to further prevent any resurgence of FMD.
Rev. Samuel Mugisha Katugunda, the LC5 Chairman, also praised the production department's efforts and urged coordinated action to prevent a future outbreak, given that neighboring districts are not yet free from the disease.
The district leadership is set to release detailed guidelines regarding the reopening and management of animal markets soon. These measures aim to ensure safe animal movements and prevent the spread of Foot-and-Mouth Disease (FMD) from the neighbouring districts.
